2019년, 나는 뉴트리아 민간인 포획자, 낙동강유역환경청, 동물자유연대와 인터뷰하며 박멸과 공존이 동시에 진행되고 있는 상황을 발견한다. 동시에 뉴트리아가 가진 혐오성, 괴물쥐와 같은 프레임이 박멸의 명분을 만들어 주고 있는 모습을 발견한다. 오해하고 싶어서 오해하는, 저널리즘이 명시하지 않는 이야기들을 찾아 가지만, 그 과정에서 ‘박멸을 통한 공존’이라는 모순적인 결론에 맞닿는다. 뉴트리아는 인간과 이미 공존하기에 박멸하려는 것일까? 아니면 공존할 수 없기에 박멸 하려는 것일까?

2023년, 정부가 뉴트리아의 완전한 박멸을 목표로 삼은 해, 나는 여전히 생존하는 뉴트리아를 1인칭 시점(bodycam)을 통해 기록하며, 박멸과 제거라는 이분법을 넘어 그 동물의 세계를 비추고자 한다.

In 2019, I conducted interviews with civilian nutria trappers, the Nakdong River Basin Environmental Office, and the Animal Liberation Federation, uncovering a paradoxical reality where extermination and coexistence were taking place simultaneously. At the same time, I observed how the nutria’s negative image—framed as a repulsive “monster rat”—served as justification for its eradication. Seeking out the untold stories that journalism overlooks, I ultimately arrived at the contradictory notion of “coexistence through extermination.” Are nutrias being eradicated because they already coexist with humans? Or is eradication pursued because coexistence is deemed impossible?

In 2023, the year the government declared its goal of complete nutria eradication, I continue to document the surviving nutrias through a first-person perspective (bodycam), aiming to illuminate their world beyond the binary of extermination and removal.
